Where good ideas come from.
Watch Steven Johnson ‘Ted Talk’ and cognitive media animation
I have watched this talk before in a previous unit, but I did find it interesting to watch again, and actually I must admit most of my ideas come from when I am sitting in a coffee shop, usually when I have some time to spend on my own, with enough space to let my mind think. I used to take trips out to Whitstable in Kent and as well as seeing the seaside, the harbour and the boutiques, I would always take myself off to the little coffee shop and spend an hour on my own with my notebook, and just jot down thoughts and ideas. The ideas where to do with anything in my life, job, art, interior design, car etc.
This was the place I realised that I was unhappy in my current job (retail manager) and decided to take steps to change my career, to a more creative one.
I think it’s the cosy nooks, the warm drinks, the comfy seats and sofas. The availability of snacks and food, it’s a comfortable setting, the lights are dim and not too bright. there are toilets to hand, plugs for your electronics.
The media animation, sparked more of a network type of thinking, you have a hunch and someone else might have the other half of the hunch, it creates new configurations and environments.
The SCAMPER process again I have used in a previous unit, so I know about the method. This is also used in an upcoming exercise, where it has been slightly modified for the challenge.
It gives unusual outcomes, and sometimes makes you think differently, which is when the outcome changes and becomes something new.
