Consider how well you are progressing against the learning outcomes for this unit. For example:
- How well have you designed a distinct practice based project for yourself?
- How well have you produced a meaningful and individual body of work, and have these drawn on your strongest ideas?
- How well have you drawn on contextual and practical knowledge to inform your creative practice, and have you been able to critique these?
- Have you evaluated your practice critically, and how well have you presented the results?
- Throughout the process of the book, I have designed and managed a distinct practise – based project that reflects my personal creative voice and professional direction as a children’s author/ illustrator. From the initial stages, I identified a clear focus on environmental care, empathy, and a connection to nature, this translated into a visual and narrative language that is uniquely my own.
I have demonstrated the ability to independently plan, research, and execute a cohesive project, integrating written storytelling and painterly watercolour illustration, surface pattern design, and digital elements and composition. My creative process has been inspired by engagement with research into children’s picture books, visual communication and environmental education. This research helped the look and tone of the book but also my aesthetic decisions, ensuring my work remains age appropriate, purposeful and resonates emotionally.
Completing this self directed project has also strengthened my professional awareness, from developing a consistent style across my portfolio and website to preparing work for print, digital presentation, and an exhibition style page on my website. This practise has helped me refine a distinct visual identity that combines hand rendered illustration with digital refinement, and a storytelling approach embedded in nature and kindness.
Ultimately I feel I have successfully created a project that communicates my core artistic values while meeting the expectations of the children’s professional publishing world. My book The Gardening Angel stands as a clear representation of my developing practise and aspirations to continue to produce creative, meaningful, and visually engaging work for young audiences.
2. The project draws directly on my strongest ideas, a passion for nature, storytelling, and environmental awareness, and translates them into a cohesive visual and narrative form suitable for children’s picture books. By combining painterly watercolours, delicate botanical influences, and a gentle use of colour and texture, I have developed a visual language that feels authentic to my work and practise. This communicates emotional warmth and care, encouraging young readers to connect with nature and empathy through imagery and story. My illustrations and story evolved through research into children’s publishing, environmental education, and visual communication, helping me shape my ideas into a clear professional standard. The results of my collection of illustrations, spreads, cover artwork, and surface pattern extensions, demonstrates how my strongest creative instincts have guided the entire process.
3. Throughout the development of The Gardening Angel, I have drawn on both contextual and practical knowledge to help strengthen my creative practise. My research into children’s picture books, environmental storytelling, and visual communication has provided a strong contextual foundation, helping me understand how narrative, character design, and aesthetic choices influence young readers. I have applied this knowledge through practical experimentation with watercolour techniques, digital illustrations, and composition to achieve a consistent and engaging visual language. Regular critique and reflection has allowed me to asses the effectiveness of my ideas and outcomes, refining my work to ensure that each creative thought supports the story’s emotional and educational intent.
4. I have critically evaluated my practice throughout the development of the book by reflecting on my creative decisions, responding to feedback, and assessing how effectively my work communicates its themes. Regular self evaluation and critique from family and friends have changed some key revisions in composition, colour, and narrative language. The final outcomes have been presented professionally through my portfolio website and digital mock ups, clearly demonstrating the progression and resolution of my project.
