Exercise 3

What’s going on?

Aim to soak up what’s happening at the moment within arts culture generally.

  • Flag local places you can regularly visit or websites, where you can keep track of evolving trends.
  • Make a list of your observations. What caught your senses?
  • Identify any reading, references, or practitioners to keep an eye out for.

1.

The AOI (Association of Illustrators)

Museums ( I always look at the Tate, both modern and Britain. Also the V&A museum, I look out for exhibitions that would interest me)

Instagram ( I think Instagram is a good place to see what professional and non professional artist and illustrators are up to, its a more relaxed space to find new trends, new ways of working etc.

2.

I’ve noticed a lot of colour and texture in Illustration recently, although there is a lot of what I call ‘smooth’ work, which is made using digital mediums and software. I mainly look for texture and the look of traditional materials when I am looking for inspiration, trends what’s new etc.

There’s a ‘Discover’ section on the AOI website which shows new work by professional illustrators, that always good to look at and visit.

3.

Also on the AOI website is a section for ‘Illustration’ which is aimed more at just illustration which narrows down the selection easier for me.

Creative boom is a good website to look at, it collates 20 of the newest or best illustrators that year, and you can look at their work on the website. This is interesting as it gauges new styles, up-coming trends and colours, software etc.
