Assignment 1

Option 1 Illustration

Take a blank piece of paper ideally A2 size and a pencil, begin to make marks in the top left hand corner, make short sharp marks then, stronger, larger and more varied marks, start to work across the paper. draw across all the paper making different strokes, marks and variations, short, long, doodles, circles whatever your subconscious wants to do. Come back to it later and have another go, or the next day, don’t think about the marks, make no conscious effort.

When you have filled the page, take two pieces of L shaped card and frame five sections of the paper about 12-15cm Squared. Think about the different mark destiny’s the variation, take a photograph of each of the five squares and give them one work titles, either and emotional or sensational effect you may have looking at it. Upload the five drawings and the whole page, and reflect on the process.

I started this assignment one day after work, as I new I wanted to come back to it over the weekend and a few days. I put the large A2 piece of paper on my kitchen island so it was out handy at all times, and I could just doodle as a when.

It took until the Thursday to fill up the big page, but then I could start on the next phase and make the cardboard square and identify the five pictures I wanted to use and label as my set of five.

First of all here is the large sheet filled up with doodles:-

Then here are the five squares I have chosen:-

Doodle 1.

This one I have called ‘Wave’ because it reminds me of the action of the water when it is crashing in waves on the beach.

Doodle 2.

This one I called ‘Rain’ because of the direction of the marks, they remind me of a rainy day when the rain lashes against the windows.

Doodle 3.

This doodle reminded me of ‘Confusion’ the circle marks and square marks at the top either side remind me of what its like to feel confused, then the straighter more angled marks at the bottom remind me of floating and then action, the blank space in-between is emptiness.

Doodle 4.

This square reminds me of ‘Nature’ the circles remind me of stones and pebbles, the lines above remind me of grasses, this could be on a beach or in a park, it just feels like nature.

Doodle 5.

This square says ‘People’ to me, I think it’s to do with the circles in the top half and the stick like shapes in the bottom half, it reminds me of stick men, the drawings you used to do as a child. It feels like a group or crowd of people.

Reflections

I enjoyed the process of not thinking of what I was drawing, and not having to think made it easier! After completing the large sheet I took the square I had made and tried a few different areas, but only chose the squares I had an instant connection with. I enjoyed just letting myself feel or have a reaction to the pictures, and put down my first thoughts. I like the designs I have now selected and it’s given me a different perspective of more abstract art. I have done something similar to this myself using large canvases and acrylic paint, and have just let the paint do the work then come up with a title softwoods on how it made feel.

I think this is a good practise to learn how to express yourself un subconsciously and just let whatever is inside flow out of you, then label it with your first instant feeling.

I think working in just pencil this time makes you think more about the marks, which is different to when you work with paint and colour, the colour can influence you as well.
